About the Author

Sheila Unwins long involvement with the Arab world began when she was posted to Egypt in the Womens Royal Naval Service (WRNS) during the Second World War. After the war, she went with her husband to Tanganyika as part of the pioneering and ill-fated Groundnut Scheme, staying there until after Independence in 1961 and later moving to Kenya, where she lived until the 1970s. It was during this period that she became interested in the history and culture of the Indian Ocean, paying frequent visits to Zanzibar, where she befriended an Arab family. After the family was forced to flee Zanzibar during the 1964 revolution, she found herself the proud owner of forty chests, thanks to the co-operation of her good friend, Mohamed Matar Al-Suwaidy. So began her lifelong quest to discover as much as she could about the chests unrecorded origins. Her travels, often arduous and uncomfortable, to Oman, India, Pakistan, Iran and the Yemen, were followed by further investigations in Portugal and the Netherlands in pursuit of evidence to confirm her hunches as to their provenance and stylistic origins. Sheila Unwin now lives in Devon, England.

Reviews

"This volume fills a critical gap in the understanding of the many varieties of brass-bound and decorated chest made in the lands that border the Indian Ocean. ... Unwin's book is the result of life-long research that for the first time allows collectors and scholars alike to understand both the features of the individual schools of production as well as the broader context for the manufacture and use of such pieces. ... Written in an engaging and lucid manner and richly illustrated ... this book is essential [for] anyone interested in furniture and in the material culture of the Indian Ocean world." -- Asian Affairs Asian Affairs "This book is a treasure. ... The fruit of a lifetime of research and travel. ... [it] is an invaluable guide, but much more than a collector's guidebook. ... [It] is lavishly illustrated and will appeal to the armchair traveller as well as to the collector. The pleasure of reading it is enhanced by the fine quality of the printing and paper, not to mention the skilful editing." -- British-Yemeni Society Journal British-Yemeni Society Journal "This is a highly original book, beautifully illustrated, whose material has come entirely from visual and oral sources. ... Highly recommended." -- Chowkidar Chowkidar "The Arab Chest falls into a stimulating category of book that looks at the whole cultural and commercial world of the western Indian Ocean. ... All [the types of chest] are described in detail, finely illustrated with colour photographs and drawings; in fact I would comment the book for its excellent design." -- Bulletin of the Society for Arabian Studies Bulletin of the Society for Arabian Studies "This enchanting book is required reading for anyone lucky enough to possess one of these chests." -- The Overseas Pensioner The Overseas Pensioner
