About the Author

John Gierach is the author of more than twenty books about fly-fishing. His writing has appeared in Field & Stream, Gray's Sporting Journal, and Fly Rod & Reel. He writes a column for Trout magazine and the monthly Redstone Review. He lives in Lyons, Colorado.

Trout fishers and fly casters have their first opportunity to hear Gierach read a collection of his stories. The pieces are about fishing, of course, but also about conservation, ecology, aesthetics, outdoor journalism, and the prospects of growing older. There is great variety among the tales. Aspects of trout fishing in Colorado (including a fascinating piece on ice fishing) comprise approximately half of the program, while the remaining pieces address fly fishing for bass in Texas and Atlantic salmon in Scotland. Each setting enables the author to make insightful observations on the fish, the fishers, and the ecological context, from which we learn about ourselves. Familiarity with fly fishing terminology is a definite plus. Suitable for outdoors collections.-Cliff Glaviano, Bowling Green State Univ. Libs., Ohio

Kirkus Reviews These well-crafted gems sparkle.
Sports Illustrated If Mark Twain were alive and a modern-day fly-fisherman, he still would be hard put to top John Gierach in the one-liner department.
from Dances with Trout Fly-fishing is solitary, contemplative, misanthropic, scientific in some hands, poetic in others, and laced with conflicting aesthetic considerations. It's not even clear if catching fish is actually the point.
