Reviews

'Praise for Darwin's Radio and Darwin's ChildrenA gripping evolutionary thriller that combines cutting-edge science with a compelling storyline. It's a novel that stretches the envelope of known science -- which is exactly what science fiction should do' P.D. Smith Guardian'Bear's ability to tell a good story is surpassed only by his enthusasiam for the advancing edge of molecular biology ... he might just be anticipating the next giant leap in our understanding of evolution and ourselves' Nature'GREG BEAR develops his characters extremely well, and there is plenty of action, too, in Darwin's Children ... Bear is very good at blending hard science, politics and fiction, and this is one of his strongest novels yet. Convincing, and at times depressing, it tackles the difficult question of whether a government gripped by prejudice and fear can be prevented from wiping out its perceived enemies' New Scientist'Whatever Bear touches turns epic... rarely have I felt so much the presence of great events' THE TIMES'Darwin's Radio is a tense technothriller in the Michael Crichton vein... But it's got a disturbing twist... profoundly unsettling.' NEW SCIENTIST'Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio is one of the most intelligent and original thrillers of recent years LOCUS

This thriller with ghosts centers around Peter Russell, an everyman in his late fifties who draws an unusual amount of attention from beautiful women. A former cheesecake film director, now gopher to a millionaire, Peter is caught up in a phenomenon that goes beyond the temporal world, and strange communication devices, called Trans, tap into the bandwidth inhabited by the dead. The death of Peter's best friend begins a journey that involves his rich boss, his ex-wife and daughters, and the Trans creators and climaxes with the destruction of the network and a return to "normalcy," albeit one in which most of the characters are dead. Though a good reader with a pleasing, gravelly voice (not unlike George Carlin), Jason Culp seems unable to differentiate his tones enough to accommodate the characters and drama. Bear's characteristic sensitivity to children (as seen in his Darwin series) comes through in this genuinely sad and truly creepy tale. An optional purchase.-Douglas C.
