Reviews

K-Gr 2-A calendar flips its pages as the weeks go by, letters sprout wings and fly to their destinations, and a school building gets up and changes its location at whim. These are just a few of the "special effects" in these eight short stories. Zara, Ziggy, and Zoe live together in Magic Wood with their pets-a frog, a cat, and an owl. In the first story, the three young witches decide to give a Halloween party so they send invitations to their classmates, including mean Melissa. The ensuing adventures follow the girls as they ready their home for the festivities and reveal their daily activities, until the last story, "Party Night." Animals, books, and furniture can talk and the correct magic words will make a room clean itself. Interspersed throughout the stories are the clever RSVP replies, which take on various formats and arrive in unexpected ways. Watercolor pictures splash the pages with bright images of the girls and their friends, who include wizards, trolls, and a dragon. The lively action and varied typefaces are visually stimulating and will hold the interest of new readers.-Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Adams (A Year Full of Stories) tracks a trio of broom-riding roommates as they throw a Halloween bash. They write invitations with a pen that "[makes] splotches on words it didn't like"-including one bratty guest's name-and the envelopes fly to the recipients; they also attend a runaway school ("I wonder where we'll find it today?" says one witch). The narrative may be more utilitarian than bewitching, but Bolam's (Murphy Meets the Treadmill) frisky ink-and-watercolor spot cartoons and panels keep the story zipping along until the final blow-out, which lives up to its promise of "tricks, treats, and monster marshmallows!" Ages 4-8. (Aug.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
