About the Author

Jan Dobbins is a specialist in music education for young children. A songwriter and composer, she runs creative children's workshops focusing on instrumental music, art and drama. She is also an instrumental teacher and former head of music for schools in North Somerset, England and has written a successful tutor book series for violin, viola and cello. David Sim was born in Glasgow, England. He studied graphic design at the Edinburgh College of Art in the UK, and then he studied illustration at the Royal College of Art, London. He then worked for many years in London for a wide range of clients, including magazines, design groups and advertising firms. He now works mainly for children's publishers, illustrating, designing and writing children's books. This is his first project with Barefoot!

PreS-Gr 1-Read (or sing along) with a family of six as they go about their day on their farm. They complete chores such as milking the cow, gathering the eggs, picking cherries, and raking hay, and the refrain for each verse is, "1,2,3, it's a farmer's life for me." When the work is complete, the family bakes a cake together. The colorful spreads are rendered in gouache, acrylics, and digital collage and capture the essence of a loving family. Everyone pitches in, and they all have fun. They smile (and sometimes wave) as they care for their animals and neatly landscaped grounds. The music is appended and notes about organic farming and farm products appear on the last two pages.-Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada (c) Copyright 2013.
