Reviews

Many histories and personal reminiscences of Hollywood are available, but this generous anthology ably supplies a little of each, resulting in an enjoyable, informative, and eclectic read. Arranged by decade from 1910 through the 1990s, the text traces the development of the cinematic capital via excerpts from books, memoirs, letters, diaries, and other writings by a fine assortment of producers, directors, actors, writers, commentators, and others. Included are Colleen Moore, King Vidor, Cecil B. DeMille, Frank Capra, Jean Harlow, David Niven, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sidney Lumet, Luis Bunuel, and many more. Topics range from life on the set and studio practices to historical events and humorous personal anecdotes. Each piece is preceded by short but helpful biographical data about the author. An opening background essay for each section might have been a nice touch, but the thoughtful introduction certainly provides a substantial overview. This should be a high-priority item on reading lists for courses in cinema history and will be of definite interest to film buffs. Recommended for educational libraries with cinema titles and public libraries.-Carol J. Binkowski, Bloomfield, NJ
