Never mind the children - I'd like the whole series for myself!" - www.pocketfulofrye.co.uk "A gripping re-telling of the most extraordinary story ever told" - The Independent; "Epic - this is history let out of the box" - The Daily Telegraph; "Astonishing - perfect for all the family" - The Sunday Times Gr 5 Up-This utterly browsable and very engaging large-format title is chock-full of scientific facts and stories. A primary feature is a removable six-foot foldout time line with art and captions that highlight the biology of the earth, laid out in three zones: under sea, on land, and in the sky. The time line begins with the big bang and continues right up to the present, offering up information about evolution and the impact humans have had on the globe. Facts are so tightly packed on the page that a plastic magnifier is made available for close inspection. General background knowledge is assumed, as the vocabulary and details are for middle schoolers, at minimum; however, visually, this will appeal to younger students. The second part of the book is in the format of a newspaper, with "articles" about discoveries in the natural world, from the work of Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and Empedocles to more recent topics, including climate change and DNA manipulation. A 50-question quiz challenges readers to find the answers somewhere in the volume. As in the time line, the writing is geared toward those with some basic grounding in the sciences and a strong vocabulary. VERDICT The visually enticing format makes this selection great for science enthusiasts to browse and share, but students looking to do research will need to seek out other, more traditional resources.-Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA * School Library Journal * "It simply sings to info-philes and visual learners alike. These books deliver on many levels and I couldn't be more impressed. Never mind the children - I'd like the whole series for myself!" (PocketFullofRye) "I liked the alternative book format, combining a 'newspaper/chronicle format' outlining scientific discoveries with a large six foot Timeline to post on the wall for children....Motivated readers can evaluate their knowledge with a Quiz at the end." (Youth Services Book Review) "Our brains positively fizzed and buzzed" (Holy Preparatory School) "Children LOVE the What on Earth Timeline Wallbook format and this is a book that I have used in class frequently." (Teachers Book Awards Review) "Each volume contains a 6-foot-long illustrated chart showing, in hand-drawn pictures across a horizontal timeline, the occurrence of major historical events.....The Wallbooks, with their unique presentation of history, are one way for students -- of any age, really -- to follow their own interests into a deeper knowledge of the past." (Sarah Harrison Smith, Omnivoracious)
