Reviews

PreS-Gr 2 --The experience of a lifetime is in store for Miss Jellaby's class as they trudge through the jungle on a field trip. Quietly followed down the path by one very hungry boa constrictor, the children silently disappear, one by one, until Miss Jellaby takes swift and ingenious action. She relieves the boa of its lunch and reunites her class; all agree that it is time for lunch--with the herbivores (no more carnivores today, thank you!)--at a Burger Bungalow just around the corner. Children will delight in the fun and adventure as they tag along on this unusual field trip. Slight bits of information are integrated into the entertaining, engaging story. Of particular note are the rich, detailed watercolor illustrations that depict the jungle animals and foliage. A tweek of humor is inserted in the form of the multicolored boa. Purists may have difficulty accepting the nonfiction classification, but whether there or in the picture-book section, the book's eye-catching colors will entice readers to become involved with this class as it trods imaginative jungle paths. Gender and culture are well represented. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
