After her father's suicide, Alex Hawthorne arrives at Whistledown Farm in Kentucky to fire manager Joe Welch. She doesn't expect to find "sex-on-a-stick," to quote her teenage half-sister, and the expectations, or lack thereof, are mutual. Joe swore off women when his wife abandoned him and their three children. He doesn't anticipate finding a woman rich where it matters in character. Neither expects to find undercurrents of an evil that belies Paradise County its name. Narrator Vida Vasaitis is more than credible: Alex's voice is sweetly sensual; Joe's gritty drawl defines his character: responsible and level; and sister Neely is unforgettable as the street-smart instigator of almost anything. Though the story itself has pacing issues, with Vasaitis's help, it packs a pretty solid punch. Robards's popularity makes this an essential purchase. Jodi L.
