About the Author

J.M. Barrie was born the ninth of ten children in 1860. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 1882, he started working as a journalist. Three years later, he moved to London and was soon writing best-selling stories, novels, and plays. Barrie had no children of his own, but he befriended the five young Llewellyn Davies boys who he had met in London’s Kensington Gardens. He later became their guardian and they inspired many of the characters and adventures that appeared in his stories. Barrie’s most enduring work, Peter Pan, was first written as a play and performed in London in 1904.

Robert Ingpen was born in 1936 in Geelong, Australia, and still lives and works nearby in Barwon Heads. In 1986 he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children’s literature and he has been honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia.

*Books Go Walkabout*

"Abridged or unabridged, children's classics are going to live or die by the quality of the pictures and this edition has the benefit of copious illustrations by Robert Ingpen. There isn't a double-page spread which doesn't have at least one and they're all gloriously detailed. A well-illustrated and sensitively abridged version of an enduring children's classic."
