This book in Pont’s Readalone series is one of the most enjoyable I have read this summer. Abergelli Street is just a short ride away on the ‘number 3 and a bit bus’. And it is here that you will meet a lively assortment of characters, human and animal, that interact with each other in a delightful, quirky way. The animals speak, but their communication with the humans seems entirely natural. Caradog the cat protects the pigeons that live on the roof of the Rhossili house. Cleo and her dog, Mr Kidwelly, befriend a lost scarecrow. The Skeeter family of foxes are an example to those of us who put untidy rubbish out for the dustmen. We also meet Brinley Baseball, the donkey who wants to fly, and Uncle Helogan, the dragon who comes to live with Councillor Pedr Pizza. Pen-and-ink drawings by Elaine Franks add to the fun of the book. She captures the action and the wonderfully varied expressions of the characters, especially the animals. This is a book which should have a sequel.
