Kathleen M. German's Promises of Citizenship: Film Recruitment of African Americans in World War II makes a significant contribution to the field of African American and World War II studies. Examining the broad spectrum of African American life during the war, she links notions of citizenship to military service, especially the Double V campaign. Of special interest is her use of the documentary The Negro Soldier, which serves as a way to raise questions about why African Americans would fight to defend a racist society and how the government responded to protests about the segregated military.--Sally E. Parry, coauthor of We'll Always Have the Movies: American Cinema During World War II and associate dean and professor of English at Illinois State University
