Reviews

I have read with much interest Ken Mueller's political biography of Thomas Hart Benton. Mueller has provided a number of persuasive correctives to the extant biographies of Benton. He has also made a number of interesting, original contributions of his own. Benton was one colorful guy-irritating and infuriating to some but larger than life to others (including himself). An updated and comprehensive treatment of Benton's politics is overdue. -Michael A. Morrison, author of Slavery and the American West: The Eclipse of Manifest Destiny

Mueller's mastery of the historical literature bearing on the life of Thomas Hart Benton is excellent. Because there is not a central cache of Benton documents, this biography is necessarily squeezed out of an enormous body of parallel literature; and because Benton had his hand in so many things over several decades, it calls for quite a range of familiarity with potential sources. Mueller handles the material with unusual aplomb. -John Larson, author of The Market Revolution in America: Liberty, Ambition and the Eclipse of the Common Good
