About the Author

Mandy Southan trained at Ravensbourne College Of Art And Design and has a BA Hons. in Fashion/Textile design. She is president of the Guild of Silk Painters and a member of The Sussex Guild. She has painted on silk for many years and is particularly interested in traditional Japanese resist techniques. She experiments continually to find new ways of using old methods and her work on silk often combines different resist processes. Mandy teaches silk painting, rozome (Japanese wax resist) and Shibori at West Dean College and at her home studio in Hastings.

This is all shown in a step-by-step format, as is the whole book, with text and photographs, which is very easy to understand, and is suitable for beginners and the more experienced.The book then goes on to describe the many and varied forms of Shibori, which produce wonderful results, as illustrated. Like many the author, MAndy Southan was first introduced to tie-dyeing at school, dying a piece of fabric in a bowl. This book explores the materials and methods you need to master. There is a comprehensive section on dyeing. This explains the uses of different dyes, the equipment needed, the different kinds of dyes and the methods of application. There are notes on silk dyeing and on colour too. When doing tie-dye, there are options for binding that affect the finished result. These are all fully explored in depth and the fascinating finished pieces of cloth are shown in colour. Start with simple binding or folding and progress to the lovely technique of mokume or pole binding. In addition, to help you practice the techniques, there are eighteen projects with many variations. This should help you build up a repertoire and improve your technique.
