Mari Rhydwen is a citizen of the world. She was raised in North Wales, studied in anthropology and linguistics in London and Cambridge, and practised Zen meditation for a year in Japan. She moved to Australia and completed her doctoral research on Aboriginal literacy and language change, living and working in remote communities in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. She has held a number of research and teaching positions at universities in WA. In 2001 she won first prize in the international Economist/Shell essay competition. She is currently active in refugee support groups, thinking about moving to the Kimberley, and continuing to explore (and write about) the Australia that can still hear itself breathe.
