About the Author

After captaining England Schools Under-18 side - he led them out to glorious victory over Scotland at Firhill Park, the ground of Partick Thistle, and a draw with Wales at Fellows Park, Walsall - David McVay signed for Notts County as a professional footballer in July 1973. He earned [pound]25 per week, plus win bonuses, during his first season. Ten years and over 200 league and cup appearances for Notts, Peterborough United and Lincoln City later, he joined the Nottingham Evening Post, first as a sports writer covering his old club at Meadow Lane, then later becoming a features writer with the newspaper. He moved to The Times as a football writer four years ago since when his Old Pro column was a regular feature of The Times Football Handbook. Along with Andy Smith, he co-wrote the definitive biography of Tommy Lawton. He lives near Bunny, in South Nottinghamshire.
