Sarah Peterson is about to be married to a high-flying and ambitious young lawyer, Marcus. There had been a time in Sarahs past when her life had run amok, but her relationship with Marcus had given her the stability which she had found lacking in her youth. Whilst Marcus is away on a business trip, Sarah visits her mother in Ireland, and it is during this journey, which takes her through Wales, that she comes across a derelict cottage, Cwmderwen. On closer investigation Sarah finds that the property had last been lived in by her grandfather Jack Owen. Without even consulting Marcus, Sarah feels compelled to purchase what she sees to be her familys home. After a little research Sarah becomes aware that her ancestors were the tenants of the small farm, and that her grandfather had been murdered, supposedly by a prisoner-of-war, but why? In the second chapter Thorne Moore introduces the reader to Gwen, who moves into Cwmderwen, when she marries Jack Owen. To run two storylines together successfully can be a challenge to an author, but Thorne Moore must be applauded for her skill, as the reader skips effortlessly from Sarahs tale to Gwens. The characters jump from the page, reliving Sarahs obsession with the past and the inhabitants of Cwmderwen, and with Gwens oppressive life on the farm with Jack. What kind of man had she really married, by whom she had two sons and a daughter and now was systematically destroying her will? A Time For Silence is a true page turner, and as the tale grows in momentum, it graduates from chilling to horrific, as it tells of one womans fixation with a past that should have remained closed.
