Reviews

"Titled Elizabethans is not only a comprehensive directory of Elizabeth I's principal political, ecclesiastical, military, legal, and household officers, together with the most significant women of the the queen's court. It serves, additionally, as an indispensable atlas of the human landscape that constituted the most powerful sector of society during the years associated with the last Tudor monarchy. This is a seminal reference source for anyone working on the history and culture of the period." - S. P. Cerasano, Edgar W. B. Fairchild Professor of Literature, Colgate University, USA"This updated edition is one of those 'must-have' books for anyone interested in Elizabethan and early Jacobean court culture. The wealth of factual material will be an invaluable and dependable resource for everyone from historical novelists to literary scholars to those specializing in early modern English politics and religion." - James Shapiro, Professor of English, Columbia University, USA, and author of 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare (2005)"This revised edition of Titled Ellizabethans, is an invaluable resource for literary scholars and historians of the period. One can look up particular names of members of the political and social elite, read the lists of individuals in certain ranks and offices, and browse to discover interesting phenomena, such as the interesting mixture of native Englishmen and foreign leaders in the Order of the Garter and the enormous number of knighthoods conferred by the Earl of Essex during his various military expeditions. This reference work should have a very long shelf life." - Arthur F. Marotti, Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus, Wayne State University, USA
