About the Author

Elsebeth Lavold is one of Sweden's leading knitwear designers; her exquisite and detailed patterns have thrilled and inspired knitting enthusiasts for over 30 years. Her previous books include Viking Patterns for Knitting, described as "groundbreaking" and "an indispensable milestone in 20th century knitting literature."

Reviews

The title of this book is very apt; it is a splendid blend of both pattern book and historical journey. It opens with an introduction to the decorative styles used by different ancient cultures across the world and how these styles intertwine throughout history.

Each of her seven major styles is then covered in its own section, containing both colour photos and detailed pencil drawings of a wide range of ancient artefacts, to help explain the history and details of each style, along with knitting charts and swatches to show their translation into textiles.

Each section has several knitting patterns constructed from these charts, which are very clearly laid out including a full page photo of the finished garment or accessory.

At the end of the book there is a closing technical section with guidelines - the 'grammar' of Viking knitting, to help confident knitters create their own garments. There is also information on suggested knitting techniques and how to read pattern charts for novice knitters.

While the patterns in this book are mainly women's jumpers and jackets, it also has a range of other garments, including a panelled skirt, child's cardigan, baby's jumper and several accessories such as bags, scarf, hat and cushion cover.

Overall this is a very well laid out book, with excellent and varied illustrations and instructions.
