About the Author

As a young boy, Douglas L. Gist was fascinated by the old leather family album that preserved the dramatic photos that his grandfather, Louis P. Selby, had taken in San Francisco on the day of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Gist has long been determined to publish his grandfather's photographs to be seen by the world, and "When San Francisco Burned" is the fulfillment of his lifelong ambition.

Reviews

"No California community library or California university system library should be without a copy of When San Francisco Burned" --Midwest Book Review

"Provides photos that, until now, were squirreled into a family album. These images are especially captivating because they are reproduced on glossy pages in excellent, large-size quality; and because they often include areas of the city not seen in other 1906 photographic records. No San Francisco collection should be without this remarkable visual history." --Donovan's Literary Services
