  • Laced together by a story about arson told from several different viewpoints, the songs on 1212 display Barbara Manning's usual amounts of lyrical depth and emotional valence, bolstered by covers of Amon Duul (the breathtaking "Marcus Leid") and humorist Thomas Lehrer ("Irish Drinking Song," renamed "Rickety Tickety Tin"). The standout here is the pensive, '60s-ish rocker "Blood of Feeling."
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (6/17/97, p.68) - "Manning has long been one of indie rock's undervalued treasures, surveying personal pain with devastating insight and stark melodicism....material by such fellow iconoclasts as Richard Thompson and '50s satirist Tom Lehrer show off Manning's considerable interpretive gifts." - Rating: B+

Option (7-8/97, p.116) - "...maintains her reign as the queen of indie rock heartbreak....1212 wants to be a concept album, but the lighter, tighter elements are the ones that shine."
