Released on the same day as its companion volume THE SINGLES COLLECTION, 1999's THE B-SIDES COLLECTION is arguably the more interesting of the two albums. Although Skinny Puppy fancied themselves rebels and social outcasts, their singles were often surprisingly normal. Their b-sides, on the other hand, were usually more exciting, inventive, and experimental, and fans of the more challenging aspects of this Canadian trio's music would do well to start here instead of with THE SINGLES COLLECTION. Ignoring their more derivative early albums, this collection starts in 1987 with the hammering cut-up remix "Addiction (Second Dose)" and continues through 15 cacophonous experiments up through 1992's "Nature's Revenge." Highlights include the daringly ethereal "Cage," the self-explanatory "Punk in Park Zoos," and a handful of remixes and dub versions of the group's best-known songs. THE B SIDES COLLECTION is an essential for fans and novices alike.
