  • In the 1980s, when countless haircut bands were busy preening for photo sessions, Florida roots rocker Charlie Pickett and his bands the Eggs and the MC3 turned out raw, gritty sounds with country and blues influences and a rough, rocky edge. Amid the dark, swampy grooves found on this Pickett career summary, one can discern echoes of everything from the Gun Club's punky blues to the rock noir of X, with trace elements of the Rolling Stones at their edgiest and garage rockers like the Flamin' Groovies (whose classic "Shake Some Action" is covered here). Ultimately, though, the sound of Charlie Pickett was always that of pure American music, from Nashville to Memphis and beyond, being filtered through a distinctive sensibility that resulted in an embarrassment of aesthetic riches and a conspicuous absence of commercial success.
Professional Reviews
Magnet (p.116) - "[T]he range of material is impressive, from the slide-guitar blues of 'Penny Instead' to the overtly Keith Richards guitar riff that drives 'On Horseback.'"
