Ben Webster took two essentially contrasting approaches to music throughout his career. One of the best tenor saxophone balladeers, he used a breathy and sensual sound on tunes like "Body and Soul" and "Memories of You"; on these ballads, he gets that reed vibrating, showcasing the woody vibrato and legato phrasing that won him fans.
On other types of tunes, Webster played with a gruff, raspy tone. This approach earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting jazz stylists of his generation (of course, much of Webster's style comes directly from Webster's hero, Coleman Hawkins). On tunes such as "Limehouse Blues" and "Teezol" Webster's energetic playing in showcased best.
Marked by both ballads and barn burners (22 tracks total), BEN AND THE BOYS is a superb and spirited album that takes a trip back to a time when swing was king.
