  • On its 2005 studio album, BREAKOUT, Soulive--consisting of guitarist Eric Krasno and brothers Neal and Alan Evans on keys and drums, respectively--mixes its tight, funky instrumental jams with a series of tracks featuring guest stars. Admirably, each of these additional artists is perfectly suited to their allotted songs: Ivan Neville lends his bold voice to the slinky, Meters-like "Got Soul" and the shuffling "Take It Easy," while singer Chaka Khan gives a fiery performance on the energetic "Back Again" and Robert Randolph lays down some blistering pedal-steel lines on a formidable cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Crosstown Traffic." The focus, however, never shifts too far away from the Soulive trio itself, with each song reinforcing the group's remarkable interplay and musical prowess.
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (p.74) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "Soulive gets closest to their live sound in the studio when the band takes more risks....The organ trio combines that sense of experimentation with a healthy respect for what sounds good in the studio."
