Cuckoo Clocks of Hell is a full return to Buckethead's blistering, super-heavy guitar heroics after releases that focused on different parts of his multiple musical personalities. That may please the heavy shredder fans, but the relentless pummeling beats can get a bit tiresome. There's no doubting Buckethead's virtuosity, but this album starts to sound like a series of exercises after a while. It's only about two-thirds of the way in, when he slows things down a bit and opens up the form on songs like "Woods of Suicide," "Yellowed Hide," and "The Black Forest," that one starts to hear the scope of Buckethead's abilities. Fans of his heaviest guitar work will enjoy Cuckoo Clocks of Hell, but there are much more interesting albums in Buckethead's discography. ~ Sean Westergaard
