This European set looks a whole lot like an update of Love & Life: The Very Best of Diana Ross. Like 2001's Love & Life, The Greatest provides a two-disc overview of Diana Ross' career, both with and without the Supremes, and it's freshened up with the inclusion of some inessential post-2001 material, like Ross' duet with Rod Stewart, taken from Stewart's fourth Great American Songbook release. The Greatest contains the majority of Ross' biggest hits -- "Love Child," "Stop! In the Name of Love," "You Keep Me Hangin' On," "Love Hangover," "Upside Down," and "Endless Love" among them. There's no perceptible rationale behind the track sequencing, as it hops from era to era, and some of the selections are questionable (some significant hits are neglected), but The Greatest functions as a rather satisfying sampler for casual fans. ~ Andy Kellman
