Performer Notes
BGO's 2014 two-fer pairs Dory Previn's eponymous 1974 album and its 1976 successor, We're Children of Coincidence and Harpo Marx. These are Previn's two records for Warner, records she cut right after leaving United Artists, and they'd prove to be the last she'd ever make (with the exception of the digital-only 2002 set Planet Blue, that is). She had different producers for each record yet they both share a slick, woozy Bohemian sensibility. Perhaps Previn stretches a bit on We're Children, sometimes dipping into gussied-up reggae, but both albums are decidedly creatures of the mid-'70s, a time when idiosyncratic singer/songwriters like Dory Previn were given big-budget productions that simultaneously flattered and camouflaged their quirks. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
