  • The Seattle post-punk band Pretty Girls Make Graves's sound is dreamy, vibrant, and imaginative. On their second album, ELAN VITAL, alternately ringing and clipped guitar and angular percussion frames singer Andrea Zollo's smart, feisty vocals, while an imaginative production steers the band's sound firmly away from empty alternative rock gestures. The album's opener, the unsettling "The Nocturnal House," hints at a fierce artistic intelligence at work--by the closing "Bullet Charm," the evidence is overwhelming.
Professional Reviews
Uncut (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "As Andrea Zollo's commanding voice presides with sweet menace, the album travels from the carnival-esque 'Selling The Wind' to the militant march of 'Parade', with countless twists and turns between jagged dissonance."

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.47) - "[With] punchy new wave beats and guitars that are both fuzzy and funky..."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Culminating in the gorgeous 'Bullet Charm', where power ballad dynamics meet free jazz brass, this is repeat play head music that still manages to hotwire the heat."
