  • GOSPEL SOUL was recorded by gospel journeymen the Swan Silvertones for Cincinnati label King Records. The group recorded for King from 1946 to 1951 before going on to enjoy a measure of commercial success in the '50s on VeeJay Records. Lead tenor Claude Jeter was an influence for many soul singers who followed, and there are moments on this album in which his voice takes on a sweet, Sam Cooke-like quality.
  • On many of these songs, simple finger-strummed nylon-string guitar provides a warm background over which the Silvertones weave their rich harmonies. The arrangements are simple, effective, and stirring. The bluesy "Go Ahead" has a warm and clean timbre. The closing number, "I've Tried" is a standout track. There's a graceful charm to GOSPEL SOUL that's hard to resist.
