Performer Notes
  • In his decades-spanning career, singer Jimmy Witherspoon has blurred the divisions between jazz and blues. He has swung with jazz saxophonists such as Ben Webster and wailed with the blistering contemporary blues guitar of Robben Ford. The recordings that make up RIGHT ON DOWN were originally done for the Modern label in the early 1950s. Focusing chiefly on the jumpier styles of blues and R&B (that eventually paved the way for rock & roll), RIGHT ON DOWN also includes some creamy balladry and even a rare detour into gospel. As usual, the U.K.'s Ace label's presentation has wonderful sound quality and informed liner notes.
Professional Reviews
Record Collector (magazine) (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "All the recordings were made for the Modern label between 1949 and 1953, when Witherspoon was arguably at his best in terms of energy and musical adaptability."
