  • Duke seemed to be able to relax and yet be creative in the recording studio -- sometimes he would record just to take advantage of a "lull" in his band's schedule (see the STUDIO SESSIONS on Saja/Atlantic) to try out new songs or re-work older ones. Here is a collection of such sessions, recorded in NYC in 1969-71. Even in "relaxed" mode, the results are exquisite. The bluesy "Intimate Interlude (featuring flute & bass clarinet solos)," the classics "Sophisticated Lady" and "I Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good)," the "sketches" "Eulb" and "Tenz" and an Ellington vocal on the whimsical oddity "Moon Maiden" make this more than "just another Ellington album." Oh yes, the unique-to-Ellington reeds voicings are more than intact; at times, downright edgy ("Some Summer Fun"). Fans and newcomers alike, take notice -- this is one class act.
