This four-disc set compiles some of the most enduring and best-loved work by film composer Jerry Goldsmith. Superbly compiled and sequenced, 40 YEARS OF FILM MUSIC amounts to a lavish retrospective of Goldsmith's career, and is a fitting tribute to his memory (Goldsmith passed away in 2004). Spread out over the four discs (equaling 280 minutes of music), are highlights from Goldsmith's scores to CHINATOWN, PAPILLON, PATTON, THE OMEN, ALIEN, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, POLTERGEIST, and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, among many others. Also included are selections of his well-known television themes, including THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. and THE WALTONS.
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the National Philharmonic, and the Philharmonia Orchestra (the latter two conducted by Goldsmith himself) provide stirring, highly polished performances of these memorable themes. Though not completely definitive (the collection oddly omits any music from PLANET OF THE APES, one of the artist's most groundbreaking scores), fans will be hard-pressed to find a more thoroughgoing compilation.
