Trombonist Roswell Rudd has always been known for his left-field avant-jazz excursions, but 2008's KEEP YOUR HEART RIGHT is as warm, familiar, and smooth-tasting as a hot toddy. Rudd and his group deliver a program of 10 originals, many of which have melodies that recall classics from the Great American Songbook. Beautifully arranged and played, the real treat here is singer Sunny Kim, whose crystal-clear soprano transforms Rudd's tunes into something heavenly. Those looking for a twist on classic vocal jazz are in for a treat.
