  • A dark, bluesy free-jazz outing, ON THIS NIGHT is one of Archie Shepp's smaller group efforts from his Impulse period. Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's characteristic warmth provides a plush cushion for Shepp's soulfully rough explorations, the highlight of which is a beautifully fractured version of Duke Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood." The album opens with a timely snatch of black nationalist verse, "On This Night (If That Great Day Would Come," sung by Christine Spencer, but quickly settles into a grittier, swaggering groove characterized by titles such as "The Original Sonny Boy Williamson" and "The Mac Man." Ornette Coleman bassist David Izenson might not seem the first choice for such an R&B-derived session, but then Shepp liked his funk leavened with a heavy dose of abstraction.
