  • Originally released only on cassette, Black Flag's LIVE '84 captures songs recorded during the band's near-constant touring during that year. Rather than capturing one show, as the later WHO'S GOT THE 10 1/2? would do, this collection compiles eight lengthy songs from a variety of concerts. Recording quality and energy levels vary, but this is a powerful document of one of California's best punk bands during an important period of its career. By 1984, singer Henry Rollins, guitarist Greg Ginn, new bassist Kira Roessler, and drummer Bill Stevenson had moved away from speedy hardcore into a slower, Sabbath-inflected blend of stomping tempos, slashing guitar solos (often quite lengthy, as on the instrumental opener, "The Process of Weeding Out"), and Roessler's melodic, funk- and jazz-influenced bass. LIVE '84 is very different from early albums like DAMAGED, but just as intense.
