  • October 6, 2000 must have been quite a night at Carnegie Hall, not only did the evening produce the live Ravi Shankar album FULL CIRCLE, but the opening set by Shankar's daugher Anoushka was captured for posterity as well. As such, LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL stands to prove that the young sitarist has learned well from the greatest teacher she could hope to have--her father. Accompanied by a group in the Indian classical tradition--tanpura and tablas--she moved deftly through a program of original compositions by the elder Shankar. Though the set contained no traditional pieces, the ragas are all in the classic form. Despite being young and Westernized (not to mention Norah Jones's lookalike half-sister), Anoushka has made no attempt to cross over to the pop mainstream via cheesy aesthetic compromises; she upholds the Indian classical music tradition with a purity equaled only by her instrumental skills. Both her technical facility and her emotive style are on display here, as she shows that she is one of the most gifted sitar players of her era.
