Performer Notes
  • Tom Paxton first made his name in the early 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene with short, sharp, and sly topical songs commenting on the social mores and news stories of the day. Paxton largely abandoned this format and devoted himself to children's music and more personal songwriting themes. The first half of 1996's LIVE FOR THE RECORD, then, is a somewhat unexpected delight. Songs about mid '90s media figures like Lorena Bobbitt, Tonya Harding, Bob Packwood, Michael Jackson and the ever-popular punch line Joey Buttafuoco bring back the zeitgeist of the age much more thoroughly than you might expect, and more serious satires like "Lament For A Lost Election" and "On The Road From Srebrenica" have a bite that transcends their topicality. The second half of this lengthy 29-track CD runs through a well-chosen selection of his less topical material.
