  • Originally made homeless by a brutal civil war in their native Sierra Leone, these six musicians formed a group in a refugee camp, and were later the subject of an award-winning documentary. Their first album (two of whose tracks were recorded in the refugee camp in which they first met) blends African and reggae rhythms while owing much to the all-encompassing redemptive worldview of Jamaican artists like Bob Marley and Burning Spear. On songs like the autobiographical "Bull to the Weak," "Garbage to the Showglass," and "Smile," the band's unassuming humanity in the face of its violent origins is both beguiling and quietly uplifting.

Dirty Linen (p.83) - "They use a mixture of roots reggae, West African goombay music, and rhythm and blues to convey the solace that music can offer during periods of pain, hopelessness, and loss."
