Performer Notes
  • Liner Note Author: Chris O'Brien.
  • Photographer: Marlon "Ajamu" Myrie.
  • A fine, although hardly comprehensive, set, Glen Washington's Most Wanted features the cool crooner's work for the VP family of labels, which includes "Rockers Nu Crackers," his breakthrough hit from the '70s. The killer militant cut is proudly roots rock reggae ("Down in the ghetto, we don't want the Mento/Don't want Calypso, don't want no other sound/Only Rockers") but it's surrounded by more chilled material as Washington didn't return to the label until the '90s, after a transition to the lover's rock style. Think of Freddie McGregor's evolution from "Bobby Bobylon" to "Don't Want to Be Lonely" and you get the picture, along with the same solid commitment to quality songs and grooves, which are in abundance here. Check the great, McGregor-like "Kindness for Weakness" for an example of how smooth Washington's later work goes down, or the righteous "Viper" for an example of his Beres Hammond-like ability to deliver stately tales of heartbreak. While you may not get the whole story, this book-end style collection offers a great overview of the man's later work with a first-class taste of his rookie years. ~ David Jeffries
