Performer Notes
  • Notwist: Markus Acher, Micha Acher, Martin Gretschmann, Martin Messerchmid.
  • Recorded at Uphon Tonstudio, Weilheim, Germany
  • Neon Golden was a subtle rewiring of the Notwist's long-established baroque hip-hop post-rock fetishist technique. The album's minimal kitchen-sink vibe was stronger, the wide assortment of instruments were arranged with new conviction, and the band would throw in a startlingly unpretentious mixture of tub-thumbing static, cellos, banjos, organs, and breakbeats while Markus Acher's Belle & Sebastian-styled vocals flowed underneath like island run-off. In "This Room," "Pick Up the Phone," "Off the Rails," and the excellent "Consequence," the intricacy of the band's sound remained, but with less experimental desperation and considerably better ideas. ~ Dean Carlson
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (3/20/03, p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Warm electronic atmospheres saddle up close to sad-boy pop....Markus Archer's sweet, plaintive voice [pushes] these selected ambient works toward song structure and melody..."

Magnet (p.86) - "[They] blended crunchy, skittery beats...with dubby textures, decorative string flourishes, smooth woodwind textures and insanely catchy pop melodies."

Uncut (magazine) (p.97) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[G]litchy electronics and wintry acoustic melodies, it is not a million miles from the sound that went chartwards in the hands of The Postal Service and Owl City."
