Ex-Cabaret Voltaire mainman and hard-drive renegade Kirk engages us with a recording sans any aliases, drawing from his ever-expanding collection of beats and structures. If the "intelligent techno" moniker could ever be applied to music where its definitions make logical sense, then one must attach it foremost to Kirk. As usual, he mixes a wide range of stuff: slo-mo strangeness ("Lost Souls on Funk"), oddly probing dance hooks ("So Digital"), and a softer return to his mid-tempo cosmo-beatfests of the late '80s ("Atomic"). It's to Kirk's credit that he has virtually no imitators. His style remains utterly original and rarely copied. He keeps churning out one amazing record after another, and this NUMBER is no exception.
