Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Jason Simmons (vocals, guitars); Steve Kille (electric bass); Stephen McCarty (drums).
  • The guitar bruisers in Dead Meadow dropped OLD GROWTH in early 2008 a year after relocating to the City of Angels from Washington D.C. One of the bands most committed to extolling the unflagging power of the riff, Dead Meadow have made an album that simply explodes with one guitar-driven epiphany after another. Though the songs have a sprawling quality--enhanced by guitarist/vocalist Jason Simon's heroic acid-drenched solos--they remain compact and smartly written, expertly shifting in tone and texture from swampy darkness to a righteous head-banging apex, with bits of singer-songwriter jangle in between. OLD GROWTH is one of the earliest indie gems of 2008.
Professional Reviews
Spin (p.100) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The trio still combine '60s garage jangle with thick jams that channel Iron Butterfly heaviness, but their new songs are sunnier and jumpier than 2005's dirgeful FEATHERS."

Uncut (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his fifth album gets progressively less fuzztoned and more overtly tuneful as it progresses."

CMJ - "OLD GROWTH sees the group unafraid to stretch themselves out in whatever directions crossed their hazy minds, including extended groove rock and gentle acoustic ballads."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Made in a farmhouse in rural Indiana, OLD GROWTH has the primeval, fuzzed-out power of the trio's earlier albums, but with a new clarity and groove."

Clash (magazine) (p.112) - "The end result is thick with numerous layers but retains the loose and light feel of those early live sessions, much like the act their recording regime was modeled on, Led Zeppelin."
