Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Woody Herman (vocals, clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Dolly Houston (vocals); Kenny Pinson, Jack DuLong, Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Sam Staff (baritone saxophone); Roy Caton, Don Fagerquist, Shorty Rogers, Doug Mettome (trumpet); Jerry Dorn, Herb Randel, Urbie Green (trombone); Dave McKenna (piano); Sonny Igoe (drums).
  • Recording information: The Hollywood Palladium (03/1951).
  • Authors: Nat Pierce; Woody Herman.
  • The collector's label Joyce came up with an LP's worth of unreleased radio airchecks from Herman's First Herd. This release is valuable because that particular band never commercially recorded most of these songs. Also, ill-fated trumpeter Sonny Berman (who made relatively few recordings) is well-featured throughout, along with trombonist Bill Harris, tenor-saxophonist Flip Phillips and vibraphoinst Red Norvo. There is surprisingly little Woody Herman clarinet and alto on this set but his sidemen were certainly strong enough to make this a recommended (if hard-to-find) LP. ~ Scott Yanow
