Performer Notes
  • Photographer: Kay Parsons.
  • In some respects like fellow sonic architect Steve Roach, David Parsons creates music of gigantic proportions, taking in the expanse of vast landscapes, nomadic civilizations and the rhyme of ancient tribes. PARIKRAMA is a further exploration into the wondrous cultural miasma of Tibetan lore and environment, as Parsons' grand synth banks suggest the yawning, snow-blasted surfaces of mesas and plateaus, the dangerous edges of millennia-old escarpments and the yellowed flakes of decaying parchment. Taking in the multi-hour experience of this two-disc set, one reflects in awe on Parsons' superb ability to make these far-flung territories graspable. "Kang Rinpoche," for instance, sets bells and brittle, gunmetal chimes into a gaping ocean of synth chords stretched taut into a series of riveting, cyclic drones. "Manasarovar II" places the listener at the summit of the great mountain, as electronics iris up and out into the dawn, and crystalline synths herald in the new sunrise. Evocative, atmospheric, and with a surfeit of drama, PARIKRAMA is another stunning addition to Parsons' enigmatic oeuvre.
