  • The music of Solex couldn't have originated anywhere else but in the basement of a secondhand record shop, what with its mish-mash of musical styles, sounds, and samples from the farthest reaches of time and musical space. PICK UP seems to follow no discernible pattern as it creates a musical pastiche of various beats, bleats, and instrumental colorings that range from everything from a calliope to power tools.
  • Elisabeth Esselink did indeed get the spark for Solex by experimenting with an 8-track machine in the bowels of her Dutch store. Furthermore, her music exhibits the sheer energy and joy of a music fanatic running up and back down the creaky stairs with every obscure record she could find to drop into the mix, along with a few better-known LPs, say Sugarcubes, Kurt Weill, and Jacques Brel. To sweeten the deal, Esselink layers on her own urgent and imploring vocals, pealing out abstract stories that form a seamless pastiche of their own.
Professional Reviews
Spin (11/99, p.184) - 8 out of 10 - "...PICK UP avoids sophmore slump by mobilizing digital technology, [lending] even more edge to [Elisabeth Esselink's] rigidly edited winsome weirdness....Each piece stands up very well on its own...as flashy, charming femme camp..."

Q (11/99, pp.134-5) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...it's great stuff....[Elisabeth] Esselink sings with feisty vigor throughout...which adds to the avalanche of sonorous delights lurking mercurially at the drop of every pilfered beat."

Alternative Press (11/99, pp.123,125) - 3 out of 5 - "...The cosey clack of drums...syncopate the obtrusive miasmas of mouth-watering sounds....the kitchen sinks consistently add up to full plumbing works....Solex proves to be a genuine article appropriating the tricks of a non-genuine time..."

The Wire (9/99, pp.55-6) - "...a real Ally McBeal of a proposition....[Elisabeth] Esselink's take on things is determinedly 'frothy' in a world which prizes grimy authenticity....At its best, [her] Solex mask seems to function like a fetish object - a scrying game letting her step into a phalanx of solipsisms..."

Mojo (Publisher) (10/99, p.99) - "...Solex wins the race of the 50ft queenies hands down. There's a great mangled pop psyche at work here....Haters of fake-weirdness and indie feyness will have all preconceptions shattered."
