Product Details
Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Jonathan Richman (vocals, guitar); John Felice (guitar); Jerry Harrison (keyboards); David Robinson (drums).
  • Liner Note Author: Ernie Brooks.
  • Recording information: Cambridge, MA (1971-1973); Harvard University (1971-1973); Long Branch Saloon, Berkeley, CA (1971-1973).
  • This record, recorded live in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Berkeley, California in 1972, features the original incarnation of the group (before "Jonathan Richman" was tacked on before the band's name). Their debut (THE MODERN LOVERS) was recorded the year before and wheels were supposedly in motion to make things happen for the group. But the wheels stopped and the album wasn't released for five years, by which time the original line-up had disbanded (with Jerry Harrison joining Talking Heads and David Robinson The Cars).
  • This original lineup embraced volume in a way Richman never would again. They were clearly indebted to The Velvet Underground, but Richman's lyrics were already heading off into quirky wordplay and pure romance. This is a document of a young band that believed they were on the verge of something big: their performance is charged with relentless commitment and drive. All in all, an impressive disc of straight-up rock and roll.
Professional Reviews
Alternative Press (12/94, p.110) - "...the thread of Jonathan's keen satire and celebratory innocence runs straight through its origins here in the early '70s to his latest recordings..."
