  • The second album by the Sadies, Canada's greatest contribution to roots-rock Americana since the Band, adds more vocal songs to the debut's fleet-fingered twang-surf instrumentals. Dallas Good's sandpapery baritone, like an indie rock Johnny Cash, is a perfect vehicle for dark, moody tunes like "It's Nothing To Me" and "I Tried Not To," while brother Travis Good's sweeter vocals are better suited to the gospel-tinged "Higher Power" and the garage-rocking rave up "Talkin' Down." While the debut, PRECIOUS MOMENTS, was produced in its entirety by Steve Albini, whose live-in-the-studio approach is perfect for the Sadies' brand of stripped down rock and roll, on PURE DIAMOND GOLD, Albini's efforts are interlarded with eight songs produced by the Sadies' fellow Torontoian Don Pyle, of the surf rock trio Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet. Pyle's songs, like "Starling Auto" and "Friendly Devil," for example, are reverb-heavy surf instrumentals with a heavy Joe Meek influence, complete with ghostly wordless vocal lines. The beauty of the Sadies is in the way the peppy surf tunes and the black-hearted country death songs fit together so well.
Professional Reviews
Magnet (1-2/00, pp.79-80) - "...playing the field of white-trash surfabilly, they have hit the motherlode....They're good, they're bad and they're ugly, compressing decades of country sludge into seconds of bass-thumping, cymbal-rattling, chicken-picking, No. 9 coal....damned good."
