Performer Notes

Twenty cowboy classics (including two different renditions of "The Cowboy's Lament") were compiled and released by the Fuel 2000 label in 2007 under the heading of Ride, Boldly Ride: American Cowboy Songs. This little anthology reaches back to the very beginnings of the 20th century singing cowboy tradition with performances by Jules Allen, Carl T. Sprague, Harry McClintock (composer of "Git Along Little Doggies"), Tex Owens (heard singing his own hit tune "Cattle Call") and Ken Maynard, all of whom were born before the year 1900. Other interesting characters presented here are John I. White, voice of the Lonesome Cowboy on NBC Radio's Death Valley Days during the 1920s and '30s; archetypal cowgirl Billie Maxwell; Powder River Jack and Kitty Lee; Texas native Sloan Matthews; Canada-born Wilf Carter aka Montana Slim, and Rex Allen & the Arizona Wranglers (no relation to the football team of the 1980s). As Rex Allen is generally considered the last of Hollywood's great singing cowboys, the inclusion of his live broadcast version of "Strawberry Roan" (cued with the phrase "Ride 'em, nubbins!") logically laces up this well oiled saddle bag of western favorites. Dozens upon dozens of "singing cowboys" compilation albums have been released since the introduction of digital audio technology, and many of the historic recordings heard on Ride, Boldly Ride show up on other comparably priced compilations. ~ arwulf arwulf
