Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Lee Perry (vocals, percussion); Geoffrey Chung, Earl Smith, Billy Boy (guitar); Winston Wright (organ), Boris Gardener (bass); Mickey Boo, Sly Dunbar (drums); Scully (percussion); Full Experience (background vocals).
  • Recorded at Black Ark Studio, Kingston, Jamaica.
  • Originally released in 1976 only in his native Jamaica on Lee "Scratch" Perry's own Upsetter label, ROAST FISH, COLLIE WEED AND CORNBREAD--"Collie weed" being a local slang term for marijuana--is one of reggae's finest albums ever. Perry's only solo album of the mid-'70s, it features 10 of his best songs, kicking off with the jazz-inflected dread of the simmering "Soul Fire" and ending half an hour later with the indescribably strange "Roast Fish and Cornbread." Other highlights include the cautionary "Throw Some Water In" and "Evil Tongues." ROAST FISH, COLLIE WEED AND CORNBREAD was recorded in the final months of operation for Perry's Black Ark Studios and the master tapes are believed to have been lost after Perry abandoned the studio and the country in 1976. As a result, this CD is mastered from a vinyl copy of the album. Regardless, it is essential listening.
